Richard Stagno Navarra has passed away on Saturday 19th June 2010 at the age of 66.
Richard spent the last hours of his long and distinguished refereeing career, doing what he loved most, giving his contribution to Malta Football Referees Association during its Annual General Meeting. Albeit not on the committee, he was invariably always nominated to chair the meeting as a member of the three scrutineers that administer the election of members. His wise words of advice were accepted by everyone present, young and old alike! Never questioned; as Richard was always fair and correct in all his interventions. He had just finished chairing the meeting and enjoying a drink with his friends and colleagues when he suddenly felt unwell, the rest as you all know, is a dark chapter in the Association’s history books!
Richard started his career as a Referee in August 1961 and was one of the youngest Maltese officials to be nominated and accepted on the FIFA Panel in July 1969. He was on his way to establish himself as one of the foremost officials on the Island, when his career was cut short due to an injury. This did not deter Richard in any way; he strived to become one of the leading administrators in the local football scene. He held very important posts within the Malta Football Association; to mention but a few he was General Manager at The national Stadium and held the post of Public Relations Officer. Of late, Richard occupied esteemed posts within the Malta F A as a Referees Instructor and Referees Match Observer. He was also a member on the Referees Board often writing in the local press with updates on the Laws of The Game. His last contribution was published in The Times on the 6th June 2010.
However, it was Refereeing blood that ran through his veins. He became an important figure within the Malta Football Referees Association and was a committee member for a number of years. He even held the post of General Secretary. In his later days, he made way for younger officials but was always present to give the fatherly advice that he was renowned for. Most importantly of all was the fact that when seeking his advice you would receive a wise and open-minded opinion, even one that you were not expecting. However, on reflection, you would know that he was right!
Richard was one of the first broadcasters on Television Malta and in the 1970’s established himself as one of the leading newscaster on both television and radio. Richard held the post of Communications Officer at the British High Commission for a number of years. Later in life he devoted himself to teaching English and History, ending his working career at St Edward’s College.
Persons such as Richard are hard to come by. Always with a smile on his face and a word of encouragement, Richard was always there to push you that extra mile. He will surely be missed.
Kindly remember him in your prayers and may God grant him eternal rest. Our condolences go to his family.
